GANASOWADA COULD HAVE BEEN ONEIDA NAME FOR JAMBA FLATS
Donald A. Windsor
“Ganasowada” was probably
the origin of our word “Canasawacta” and could have been the
Oneida name for the area along of the Canasawacta Creek between the
Chenango River and NY State Route 12, the land we currently call the
“Jamba Flats”.
Documentation stems from the
name “Ganasowada” on the Lewis H. Morgan map of 1721, published
in 1851 (1). It is located on the knoll by the northern entrance to
Mount Hope Cemetery.
For a full explanation see my
recent article (2).
